Twenty-four year old Tomi Lahren is a wildly famous conservative commentator on Glenn Beck’s ultra right-wing talk show, The Blaze. She is known for her racist rants, white nationalists approach, and close-minded conservatism. A video she posted on her facebook page in which she criticizes Colin Kaepernick for disrespecting the country that gives him his rights has over 66 million views.
She has said “Black Lives Matter is the new KKK. With such a big following, her words are dangerous. She represents the voice of Millennial Trump supporters, which is terrifying.
Earlier this week, she appeared on The Daily Show for an interview/debate with Trevor Noah. The interaction shed light on Lahren’s skewed ideologies, her inability to see her own racist ways, and how she has mastered the art of diversion.
Lahren claimed to not be racist because she has “never used racial slurs to address people,” she has never “looked down on” people of color.
She even used the line, “I don’t see color,” to which Noah replied, “So what do you do at a traffic light?” He added “I don’t believe in that at all when people say that. There is nothing wrong with seeing color. It is how you treat color that is more important.”
The interview showed just how divided this country is and just how stubborn and ignorant ultra-conservatives can be. Watch the whole interview here.
It is evident that rhetoric shapes worldviews. Words are tools, weapons, and vehicles for change. It is important to use your words, your voice wisely. Trevor Noah was aware of his power as he called out Tomi Lahren, but Lahren was also aware of her own power. It is clear that empathy and compassion are needed in order to overcome the immense divide in our country.
